چکیده
Autonomous Search and Surveillance with Small Fixed Wing Aircraft by Timothy Garland McGee Doctor of Philosophy in Engineering-Mechanical Engineering University of California, Berkeley Professor J. Karl Hedrick, Chair Small unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have the potential to act as low cost tools in a variety of both civilian and military applications including traffic monitoring, border patrol, and search and rescue. While most current operational UAV systems require human operators, advances in autonomy will allow these systems to reach their full potential as sensor platforms. This dissertation specifically focuses on developing advanced control, path planning, search, and image processing techniques that allow small fixed wing aircraft to autonomously collect data. The problems explored were motivated by experience with the development and experimental flight testing of a fleet of small autonomous fixed wing aircraft. These issues, which have not been fully addressed in past work done on ground vehicles or autonomous helicopters, include the influence of wind and turning rate constraints, the non-negligible velocity of ground targets relative to the aircraft velocity, and limitations on sensor size and processing power on small vehicles. Several contributions for the autonomous operation of small fixed wing aircraft

Flight Demonstrations of Self-directed Collaborative Navigation of Small Unmanned Aircraft
The development of small, autonomous UAVs that can operate in complex environments as part of large coordinated groups will enable many new applications at fractions of the cost of current systems. A fleet of fixed-wing aircraft has been developed to create an intelligent aerial platform that has demonstrated various autonomous capabilities. By means of a downward-looking camera, a single aircr...

This paper presents vehicle models and test flight results for an autonomous fixed-wing aircraft with the capability to take off, hover, transition to and from level-flight, and perch on a vertical landing platform. These maneuvers are all demonstrated in the highly space constrained environment of the Real-time indoor Autonomous Vehicle test ENvironment (RAVEN) at MIT. RAVEN promotes the rapid...

Flapping-wing robotic insects are small, highly maneuverable flying robots inspired by biologicalinsects and useful for a wide range of tasks, including exploration, environmental monitoring, searchand rescue, and surveillance. Recently, robotic insects driven by piezoelectric actuators have achievedthe important goal of taking off with external power; however, fully autonomous operation requir...
متن کاملAerodynamic Sensing for a Fixed Wing UAS Operating at High Angles of Attack
The flight profile of typical small unmanned air systems (UAS) has expanded in the last decade beyond those encountered by traditional fixed-wing transport and rotary-wing aircraft. These new flight conditions may involve unusual flight mechanics as with flapping wing flight or complex aerodynamics when performing difficult maneuvers as part of routine operations. Such scenarios typically invol...
متن کاملAircraft attitude estimation from horizon video
Measurement of aircraft attitude is a necessary step for the autonomous control of the aircraft. Autonomous aircraft are useful for a range of military and civilian purposes. A method of very low computational complexity is presented that allows the pitch and roll angles of an aircraft to be measured onboard an unmanned aircraft from real-time video of the horizon. This method can be used for m...
